Now I Get It!
I have always been a little bemused by the authors I work with. Now, I am writing a book length piece myself, and suddenly I "get" more of the things I hear. I hereby apologize to all the authors about whom I thought unkind or disrespectful thoughts. You are more heroic than I knew. And more controlled in your response to editorial or marketing suggestions than I understood.

The piece that brought about this change of heart is the first draft of the text I will be using for an internet-based class I am offering on the financial aspects of running a publishing company. It must cover the basics of accounting, financial analysis, strategic thinking, and decision making in eight weeks. Yeah, right.

And, it has to be friendly to people who aren't really numerically inclined, but complete enough to help them make more money quickly. Yeah, right.

Oh, and it has to be ready in 3 to 4 weeks. Yeah, right.

What was I thinking???

Ah, well, back to the ms. Wish me luck.

Have added you to my f-list, hope you don't mind. I am a writer, and looking into serious publishing. Really need to learn all I can about marketing and publishers. I write poetry and erotica. Am working on short stories, and have a novel or two burning away inside of course.
But, I read your comment to another author who was considering self-publishing, and decided that you seem very practical and knowledgeable on the subject. So, here I am. ;) I have you on my poetry/writing filter so you don't have to read the memes and such included in my LJ. I will however, re-open my poetry posts so you can get an idea of the different areas my writing goes, and possibly give feedback when you have time.

Thank you for friending me. I would be happy for you to share your reactions to what I maunder on about on LJ.

Poetry is a very tough sell, as I am sure you already know.

I, unfortunately, am essentially "poetry deaf." It's sort of like tone deafness. I hear and love beautiful prose. Just can't seem to tune in to the wavelength of poetry. My opinions on your poetry, therefore, would be useless and worthless. (I have to know my limits!)

Short stories are good for magazines, dreadfully difficult to sell in book-sized collections. Best to go with the novel length if that is also a strength.

I think I'll write an entry soon on book marketing for beginners. Check back later?
